A Swell Place for a Square Meal
Say, pal – step through the door at Fox’s Market House Restaurant, where the coffee is hot, the grub is good, and the welcome is always on the level.
We’re serving up the kind of eats that’ll make you want to stick around for another bite. Whether you’re a local regular, a traveler just passing through, or the whole gang rolling in for dinner, you’ll find a table waiting and a meal worth talking about.
Good Grub. No Funny Business.
We believe in keeping things copacetic (1920s word meaning completely satisfactory, fine, or in excellent order). That means hearty food, generous portions, friendly folks, and service that doesn’t leave you waiting around like a sap.
At Fox’s Market House, we’re not here to give you the bum’s rush (an abrupt dismissal from a place). Pull up a chair, loosen your tie, grab a cup of joe, and settle in. We aim to make every meal a swell time.
No baloney. No monkey business. Just straight-shootin’ grub and plenty of it.
Come On In, See?
So don’t be a jake (don’t ruin the mood); round up your mob, put on your glad rags, and head over to Fox’s Market House.
We’ll have the coffee poured, the grub cooking, and the joint jumping.
Fox’s Market House Restaurant: Good Eats. Good Folks. A Swell Joint.
No need to beat it. Pull up a chair and stay awhile. You’re among friends.
The Cat’s Meow of Lock Haven
Back in the Jazz Age, every town had its hot spot, a place where the dames and gents knew they could find good company, good cheer, and maybe a little hooch if the circumstances were just right.
Fox’s Market House is our kind of speakeasy without the secret handshake; a neighborhood joint where folks come in as customers and leave as friends.
We’re proud to be part of Lock Haven and the surrounding community. Our doors are open to the whole gang, whether you’re looking for a square meal, catching up with old pals, or making a night of it with the family.
Our History
Fox’s “gathering place” is situated in a 2.5 story brick building constructed in 1871 at a cost of $20,000.00. It was scheduled for demolition. Exactly 120 years after construction, the property was developed by entrepreneurs Stephen and Pamela Poorman – who restored the structure and opened a large family restaurant. Next, they placed the property on the National Register of Historic Places.
The architecture is Romanesque with corner towers, arched and key-stoned windows, brick friezes, pointed towers, arched and key-stoned windows, and adornments. The pointed tower designs are captured in stained glass hanging in the restaurant. The Market House demonstrates some of the most unique architectural features in Central Pennsylvania.
This prominent building was constructed in 1868 by the Lock Haven Hall & Market Company to operate a farmer’s market. The building, completed in only six months, became a “hub” of activity in Lock Haven’s early days. Farmers from the area leased spaces inside the building to sell provisions.
The Market House basement includes a 160-foot center corridor with a brick arched ceiling. Partitioned on either side of this long corridor are twenty-two small rooms, also with arched ceilings. Food and grain was hoisted through floor openings into waiting wagons inside the building. You may view this space in a photograph on the restaurant wall.
